Das Fundament des Bartendings – historische Bücher in Zeiten des Internets. Teil 4: Literatur im 20. Jahrhundert bis zum Beginn der Prohibition (1900 – 1919)

Literatur.

Mit dem Manhattan Cocktail begann eine Entwicklung, die hin zu einem Goldenen Zeitalter der Bar-Kultur führte. Wir trennen diese fortlaufende Entwicklung im Jahr 1900 in eine Früh- und Spätzeit voneinander ab. In diesem Jahr erschien einerseits Harry Johnsons 2. Auflage des „New and Improved Bartender’s Manual“ (mit diesem hatten wir die „Frühzeit“ im Jahr 1882 beginnen lassen). Andererseits umfassen so Früh- und Spätzeit jeweils 18 Jahre, denn die letzten wichtigen Bar-Bücher vor der Prohibition erschienen bis 1917. Dieses Goldene Zeitalter des Bartendings fand mit dem Beginn der amerikanischen Prohibition im Jahr 1920 ein jähes Ende.

Marcovalso Dionysos gibt Albert Seifert als Autor an, doch es ist unklar, wie er zu dieser Aussage kommt. Andere Versionen mit diesem Titel wurden durch andere Spirituosenhändler veröffentlicht, wie dies auch durch einen Copyrighteintrag aus dem Jahr 1907 bestätigt wird. [1]

    It’s not clear to me on what basis the Holtz & Freystedt book is being assigned to 1912 and as „compiled by E.J.M.“. Looking through the scanned copy (both EUVS and HathiTrust seem to be the same) I don’t see any date given or compiler credited. Nor was I able to find any supporting evidence pinning the book to this date by searching in contemporary sources through newspapers.com and Google Books.

    I’d therefore be wary of using that source as the foundation of any historical theories. 🙂
